When looking at retirement options for a loved one, as a caregiver it may be up to you to help make the proper decisions. There are many senior care facilities, as well as a variety of options.
There also are varied living styles that can add to the choices. Some loved ones may require an independent living facility, while others might require an assisted living community, and some may find the need for a nursing care facility. Then there is the Continuing Care Retirement Community, also known as a CCRC.
What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)?
A CCRC is known sometimes as a life-care community. This is because it not only is a retirement community, but new services can be added as loved ones need them. It is an all-inclusive housing community that can act as an independent living community, an assisted living community, and also as a skilled nursing care facility. Because of this, residents can easily transition from one form of living and care to other without having to relocate.
Benefits of a CCRC
The main benefit of a CCRC is that senior residents do not need to move as their needs change. Those who have entered as independent living residents may later need assisted living or nursing care. If that happens, there is less worry, at least about where these loved ones will stay since they can stay right where they are. Other benefits may include amenities, such as a lake, golf course, community pool, and more. Also, with all three senior care options in the same place, there is better chance of your loved ones being able to stay in the same retirement community as family and friends.
Where to Find a CCRC
Ask nurses, doctors, and even friends or family members who have some experience placing a loved one in a senior care facility. There also are agencies that can help with your search. Look up senior care facilities online and in the phone book as well. Also, simply drive around the desired city or town of residence. There are many ways to find a CCRC.
Choosing a CCRC
Choosing the right CCRC for a loved one is an important decision. Once you find communities that sound like a good match, be sure to research them further, as well as visiting the facility. Talk with current residents to find out their thoughts about living there. Check to see if there are any questionable reports filed against the retirement community. Since this is the place that your loved one will likely be living for the duration of their time, it needs to be chosen with care.
Think not only of the quality of life and care available, but also think about the community itself. Also, consider the appearance of the facility. Be sure to choose a place your loved one will be happy with most (if not all) aspects, not just one.
