Beijing’s Chaoyang district added more than 1,000 beds for the elderly each year in the past five years. The total number of nursing beds has increased to 15,891 and is expected to reach 18,000 by the end of 2015.
The district added 1,086 beds last year, 626 of them were provided by three private elderly care institutions.
"The local government encourages social forces to help construct elderly care institutions. There are four institutions invested by the government while run by the private sector, accounting for 11 percent of the district’s total number," a representative said.
The government also provides subsidies for such institutions to attract social capital. Welfare institutions can get 200 yuan ($33.08) to 250 yuan if they take in one senior citizen every month. Star-rated institutions can receive a reward of 10,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan.
